This coat was an absolute labor of love. The original quilt (from Spokane WA) was stunning but had MANY flaws that had to be repaired. Only 15 of the 63 squares were in good shape, and I had to pick them apart with a seam ripper and tweezers!

I had to try many pattern layouts, so it laid on my living room floor for over a week while I played with multiple combinations of patterns and sizes.

I was surprised at how many different fabrics were used to make the original quilt - plus a variety of white background fabrics were used.

The quilt was so thick that I decided to try a different way to piece the seams together by basically "lap quilting" the major seams together; I'm very happy how it turned out with nearly invisible seams on the inside.

The buttonhole loops are made of random cotton strips that I twisted together to form twine.
